Alumni:
Emily Nobers
Graduation
Year: December 2018
Major: Marketing & Accounting
What do
you think about your Marketing education?
“Well, overall I thought my Marketing
education was pretty solid. There was a wide variety of classes that covered
lots of areas of Marketing (sales, advertising, social media). Some of the work
that we had to do seemed more like busy work, like in your real life job I
suppose, rather than relevant information. Most professors were pretty
knowledgeable and willing to help. None of the Marketing professors ever made
me cry, but the accounting ones had their times!”
What
class(es) did you find most useful?
Social Media for Marketing had been the most
beneficial for Emily’s current job because it helped her learn the terminology
they use in the office and the simulation helped her understand how social
media insights work, which gave her an advantage in her interview. Customer
Resource (Management/Marketing) was helpful with the mathematical side of Marketing
and learning different programming. Psychology of Selling was another favorite
of Emily’s as it helped her learn how to communicate with different types of
people in the business world.
What
are some ways you would improve the Marketing Department?
Emily recommended that the Marketing
department do its best to get students more involved. “Students would show up
to class but weren’t getting involved or giving that bit of extra effort it
takes to stand out. Get kids more interested in the work they are doing by
giving it a purpose, not just meaningless tasks and busy work. Professors and
students alike need to be more on their game.” she stated.
Did you
join any educational extracurriculars/clubs/organizations that dealt with your
major?
Emily was a member of AMA during her 3 and
½ years at RMU and was the President her
Senior year. She was also on the Case Competition Team since freshman year,
allowing her to make connections with older students. She was also a member of
WLMP, which gave her a professional mentor who gave her advice on entering the
workforce.
Were
you able to find a job after graduation in the Marketing field? If so, how long
was the process?
“Yes, I started looking for jobs in late
November/early December. I found a job in the middle of January (after
graduating in December) and was able to start my job in February. The interview
process was quick (for Merkle), I did a phone screening, and then a few days
later a phone interview with who is now my director, followed by an in person
interview with a group of 4 people, having to do tasks such as Excel problems
in front of them which was nerve wracking but I was able to complete them
fairly easily.”
What
advice would you give to current students?
“I would definitely say when picking your Marketing
electives, pick something that you could do as a career not just what is the
easiest. Get involved in the AMA because it gives you access to lots of
resources that will help you network. Be confident in yourself when trying to
get internships, because I was always super shy, but once you have a few solid
talking points the interviewer will notice that and you will stick out. Once
you get a position, build trust and strong relationships with your coworkers,
and show that you’re committed to your job because it will help you get raises
and promotions.”
